what you need
- 1/2 cup butter, divided
- 1 cup oats
- 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsifted flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 pkg. (6 oz.) Baker's Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Preheat oven to 350°F. In medium saucepan, melt 6 tablespoons butter; stir in oats, sugar, flour, and baking soda. Press firmly on bottom of a non-stick 13x9 inch baking pan. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or till lightly browned.
Meanwhile, in medium sauce pan combine remaining 2 tablespoons butter and sweetened condensed milk. Over medium heat cook and stir until mixture thickens slightly, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Pour over crust. Return to oven; bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until golden brown. Remove from oven.
Immediately sprinkle chips on top. Let stand 1 minute; spread while still warm. Cool to room temp. Chill. Store tightly covered at room temp.
Notes
You can omit the chocolate chips for butterscotch chips.
You may also add 1 cup chopped walnuts or slivered almonds to recipe.
