what you need
- 8 slices firm-textured white bread, cut in 3/4-inch cubes (about 8 ounces), dried*
- 1 package (12-ounce) uncooked skinless pork sausage links
- 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (3 ounces)
- 6 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
make it
1. Place bread cubes in the bottom of a lightly greased 2-quart baking dish. Prepare sausage according to the package directions; drain. Cut sausage in quarters. Sprinkle sausage over bread cubes. Top with shredded cheese.
2. In a medium bowl beat eggs; add milk. Stir in mustard and salt. Pour over bread-sausage-cheese layers in dish. Cover and chill overnight.
3. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Notes
*To dry bread: Arrange bread cubes in a single layer in a shallow baking pan; cover loosely and let dry at room temperature overnight. Or bake, uncovered, in 300 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring once.
