Bring on the Tomatoes

There are so many delicious ways to enjoy tomatoes! Take a peek at a few easy recipes and stay-fresh tips.

What’s one of the most versatile foods of summer? The tomato, of course. It’s also one of the most bountiful. The challenge in summertime isn’t where to find them—it’s how to use them before they go bad. The good news is that KRAFT offers plenty of delicious and easy ways to use tomatoes at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack time. Here are some great tomato tips and tricks.

Store them right. To make sure your tomatoes retain their flavor, store the unwashed fruits at room temperature, not in the fridge. (Cold temperatures make them mealy and flavorless.) If they aren’t ripe, store them in a paper bag out of direct sunlight, and check them daily for ripeness. Wash tomatoes under cold running water just before using.

Serve them over eggs. Our Morning Burrito recipe calls for salsa, but you can sub chopped tomatoes instead.

Make a no-lettuce salad. Our Fresh Tomato & Tomatillo Salad gets its green from tomatillos—a slightly lemony, acidic tomato relative—instead of lettuce. Remember to remove the husks of the tomatillos before cutting them up.

Sprinkle them over pasta. Tomatoes can jazz up leftover grilled chicken or pasta: Check out our Quick Chicken-Parmesan Pasta for an easy how-to. You can also use fresh chopped tomatoes instead of spaghetti sauce, like we did in our No-Cook Fresh Tomato Sauce with Pasta. This pasta topper is ready in the time it takes to boil the noodles. Serve these dishes chilled on a hot summer’s night.

Use them as a go-to snack. What could be easier than munching on cherry or grape tomatoes dipped in a little KRAFT reduced fat dressing? Or use that extra plum tomato in our Cheesy Tomato Melt snack recipe, made with RITZ Low Sodium Crackers and KRAFT 2% Milk Shredded Cheddar. The microwave does the melting, so you don’t have to dirty a skillet—or heat up your house.

Enjoy a simple side dish. Sliced tomatoes drizzled with a bit of olive oil are one of the easiest summer side dishes ever. Got more time—and lots of veggies? Cook up the classic French dish Ratatouille. It’s a great way to use up whatever veggies you’ve got in your garden…or on your countertop.
