There are tons of kitchen gadgets out there to choose from, but if you’re going to splurge on something new, you want it to work—and be worth it. Here are three favorites from the Kraft Kitchens.
A mandoline. If you’re trying to add more vegetables to your meals, having the right tools to slice them is a big help. (After all, most recipes don’t call for whole peppers and zucchini!) A mandoline consists of a platform with a slicing blade in the middle. Some come with a food holder with prongs that stick into the food you’re going to slice. This protects your knuckles from the blade and makes it easier to slice foods evenly. You can use a mandoline to slice thin rings of zucchini for Tuscan Vegetable Baked Ziti or thick wheels of lemon for your hot tea. For quick cleanup, look for a model that’s dishwasher-safe. A food processor. At this time of year, try a food processor to chop or puree lots of vegetables for comfort foods like Chipotle-Tomato Soup. Some other ideas: Make whole wheat “bread crumbs” out of Triscuit crackers, or roughly chop fresh fruit and/or nuts for on top of your morning oatmeal. Herb scissors. This favorite kitchen tool makes it easy to snip fresh basil, parsley, and oregano. Many pairs are sturdy enough for all kinds of other uses, too, from cutting meat and vegetables to snipping twine and even cardboard. (Check the packaging to find out what yours can handle.)
