Am I the only one who gets starry-eyed at the prospect of a new year? Last year’s challenges seem to fade into the background—it’s a clean slate! And in the midst of that annual enthusiasm, I pinkie-swear that this will be the year I eat more fruits and vegetables, keep my closet neatly organized and practice daily 5 a.m. sun salutations (that last one…oof).
If you made similar resolutions, you’re on your own for the second and third goals. But for the first, here’s help! With smoothies, you can absolutely start the day on a good note: Just throw some fruit and veg in a blender—and there’s nothing my kids love more than pushing the “blend” button—then get a fancy straw and suck that goodness down.
The Green Vegan Smoothie: It’s true what they say about green smoothies—you honestly can’t taste the spinach. It purees beautifully, leaving behind just its pretty green color. Add some avocado for creaminess, mango for fruitiness and a packet of lemonade drink mix to pull all the flavors together, and voilà! Good morning accomplished.
Fresh Banana Smoothie: Secret ingredient time—pull out the lemon gelatin. Seriously, it provides just the pop of flavor and thickening power you need to transform banana chunks, cereal and milk into a little (better-for-you) glass of heaven.
Green Tea and Berry Smoothie: There’s plenty of research to suggest that drinking green tea has a bunch of health benefits, so infusing that goodness in a berry-rich smoothie? Win. And if you only have one variety of berries in your freezer, don’t let that stop you. Plain ol’ strawberries work, or blueberries, or blackberries. Use what you’ve got!
