All-Time Favorite Labor Day Recipes

The thought of trading in flip-flops for boots and sand for fallen leaves makes me realize that I’m just not ready for summer to end yet. While there’s nothing that will make the warm, sunny days never-ending (except maybe a move to Southern California?), I can make sure I squeeze every last drop of fun out of festive barbecues, fresh-cut grass, dips in the pool and all the rest. With that in mind, I’m sharing my most unforgettable, all-time favorite Labor Day recipes. They’re a mix of traditional—potato salad, Watergate salad—and new recipes—zucchini fries, peanut butter s’mores bars—and some others in between, but they’re all guaranteed to make this Labor Day the best in recent memory!

Down-Home Potato Salad: Potato salad is a cook-out must. This home-style version is packed with ripe summer tomatoes and crunchy green onions, plus some mustard and chopped ham to amp up the flavor.

watergate salad

Watergate Salad: Listen, you can’t go wrong with Watergate salad—ever. I bring this guy to just about every holiday and special occasion I attend all year long. Why? It’s so simple to make, and this sweet and nutty salad is always a hit whether it’s warm out or cold.

smores peanut butter bars

Peanut Butter Cookie S’Mores Bars: If, like me, your philosophy for cooking (and life) is “go big or go home,” you’ll appreciate this recipe. Peanut butter transforms into a crust topped with melted marshmallows and a creamy chocolate topping to become the mash-up you never knew you always wanted.

foil-pack chicken bruschetta

Foil-Pack Bruschetta Chicken Bake: Sure, you could make burgers and hot dogs, but you could also take your grilling to the next level with this super easy but impressive foil pack chicken recipe. All it takes is about 15 minutes of mixing and layering ingredients before you plunk it down on the grill.

zucchini fries with lemon aioli

Zucchini “Fries” with Lemon Aioli: Leave the potatoes for the salad; these crispy, better-for-you zucchini fries will be a surprise crowd-pleaser. Toss matchstick slices of zucchini with a mixture of Parm and a bread crumb-like coating mix to create faux fries that bake up golden brown and crunchy.

berry cake

Berry-Berry Cake: Ripe, fresh-picked blueberries and raspberries are basically the best thing about summer, and this recipe is the best way to pay them tribute. Cream cheese and sour cream make this from-scratch (but easy) cake super moist and tender.
