When the fall and winter months roll around, people inevitably start searching our blog archives for the same things. Obviously pumpkin, pumpkin and more pumpkin, but also butternut squash and apple recipes. But you know what else we know you’re going crazy for? Soup. With the advent of sweater weather, you—just like us—yearn for hearty, warm pots of soup, including taco soup, simmering away on the stove. There’s something about it that’s just as comforting for the soul as it is for your taste buds. In fact, a good soup is often my go-to when I take dinner to a friend or neighbor. It’s so easy to turn it into a meal by pairing it with a simple salad and a good loaf of bread. Continue reading
A traditional apple pie is a thing of beauty, of course, but it can get a little…predictable. And that’s a quality I just can’t have in my baked goods. I want show-stealers. Eye-poppers. Taste-bud-tinglers. And that’s where these next-level apple recipes come in. Because once you’ve made an apple rose mini tart or an apple pie-baked apple, you’ll never go back. Continue reading
As much as I consider myself a foodie—and I love trying new and exotic foods—there’s something pretty wonderful about a simple and delicious mac and cheese recipe. Mac and cheese is perpetually popular with my kids, but it’s also one of my own favorite comfort foods. At the end of a long day, there’s nothing better than a bowl of cheesy goodness. Do you keep up with your food holidays? No, I don’t mean Thanksgiving or Easter; I’m talking about Blueberry Cheesecake Day (May 26), Pierogi Day (October 8), or, perhaps most important of all: S’mores Day which is August 10th! Sure you could gather around the campfire and cook up the classic, but these require no bug spray! Continue reading
Ripe, juicy summer fruit is bursting from grocery and farmers’ markets these days. Time for me to grab my rolling pin and reach for the pie recipes! The window of opportunity to make desserts from perfectly ripe berries or peaches is brief but glorious, and I’m asking just one thing of you: Take advantage of the bounty while it lasts and make a pie. Any kind! Blueberry pie, double-berry pies, fruit-stuffed hand pies…they’re all amazing. And with the right recipes (*cough* like the ones I picked below *cough*), they can be ridiculously easy to make too.
There’s nothing more satisfying than that first sip of ice-cold lemonade on a steamy afternoon. Unless we’re talking about strawberry lemonade. Or a frozen lemonade slush. Or raspberry-lemonade pie. Or—well, you get the idea. Lemonade is a summer classic for a reason, and I’m taking it to the next level with these twists on an old favorite.
Hands down, I give bell peppers the title of best summer veggie. They are so incredibly versatile, and are delicious raw, grilled, roasted or sizzled in a skillet! I use them year-round, but they are at their peak this time of year. That’s why I love canning them as Quick & Easy Hot Pepper Jelly to use later.
