Like pumpkin and spice, some fall flavors are just meant to be together. For me, no combo is more perfect for the season than juicy apples and sweet caramel. Now that we find ourselves heading into the cooler season of fall, thoughts of berries, stone fruit and watermelon are in the past. The produce aisles are filling up with rows of apples—so many different varieties. During this time of year, I love taking a trip to one of the many apple orchards we have here in Washington state and seeing which new varieties each orchard has to offer. On dreary days, I’ll fry up some apples, butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and eat them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It is the pinnacle of comfort food. Continue reading
Every year we take a family trip to the orchard, where we drag a wagon from tree to tree, twisting off low-hanging fruit. After a long, hot summer we are glad to be in sweatshirts and sneakers, energized by a nip in the air. What with that mellow September sunlight, the kids, the trees and the apples, this outing is my secret favorite moment of the season. We start baking as soon as we get home; we’ve got the oven preheating before our jackets come off. Here are some of our tried-and-true faves, plus a brilliant way to keep sliced apples fresh and crunchy!
