Ready for fireworks? I’m not talking Roman candles, either—I’m talking the oohs and ahhs that will commence when you set down a tray of brightly colored goodies in front of your July 4th guests. Best-of-Summer Fruit Kabobs

This summer has been ridiculously warm here in the Pacific Northwest. There have been a few weeks when the temperature has peaked at 95 degrees, which is way too hot for a city with few air conditioners. If I had known that this summer was going to be this hot, I would have invested in a pool: inflatable, kiddie, above ground or all of the above. Instead, we’ve been making frequent trips to the various lakes and beaches that surround the city, trying to cool down with frequent splashes in the waves. And a lot of watermelon consumption.

Backyard Camping (Bamping?)

I am that mom who is always droning on about the benefits of getting the kids outside, to experience the grass between their toes, the leafy dappled sunlight, the song of the cicadas. (In fact, I drone on as long as the cicadas do, and just as loudly.) So every summer we set up a tent in our backyard, drag out some sleeping bags and…“bamp” out. We spot fireflies, play flashlight tag and grill up savory foil packets on our grill.
