Halloween Fun In The Kitchen

Whenever I cook, I try to involve my son in the preparation process. He’s at the age where he’s showing a great deal of interest in what I do. Whether it’s holding a white board as a light reflector for me when I’m shooting food photos, or simply making masa patties when I make tortillas. It’s great to have him next to me, asking questions, letting him be creative and get his little hands messy with frosting cupcakes or stirring a pitcher of fresh cantaloupe agua fresca. He loves it because he giggles with excitement the entire time.

Halloween time is one of those seasons when we have so much fun in the kitchen. Not only do we partake in all the Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos preparation but it’s also my son’s birthday month. This year, we decided to make Halloween/birthday treats for his preschool class together. I wanted my son to really get involved in this project and do the bulk of the preparation. To get our creative juices flowing, we turned to Kraft Foods for Halloween-Inspired Kraft Recipes. Not only is the site filled with Halloween ideas but great casserole, pumpkin and slow cooker recipes for the fall.

As if the Kraft Foods site wasn’t inspirational enough, we received a Halloween-packed special delivery filled with Halloween themed goodies from Kraft Foods. My son set his eyes on those JET-PUFFED JUMBO PUMPKINMALLOWS from the get-go. With that in mind, we decided to make Chocolate Decorated Pumpkin Mallow Pops for classmates.

The project was simple, fun and educational. Once I showed my son how to assemble and decorate the pops, he took the project and made it his own.

Pumpkin Mallow Pops
Prep Time: 10 minutes • Cook Time: 5 minutes • Serves: 12

½ cup chocolate candy melts

Special Materials
Cake-pop sticks
One freezer plastic bag

PLACE candy melts in a small microwaveable bowl and heat in one-minute increments until the chocolate is completely smooth. Let cool for 3 minutes. Carefully spoon chocolate in plastic bag and push chocolate to the bottom of the plastic bag, into one of the corners. Twist the top of the plastic bag and cut a small hole of the tip of the bag (resembling a pastry bag).

INSERT Cake-pop sticks into the bottoms of each mallow and placed them on a large tray or work surface.

PIPE Jack-O-Lantern face or fun designs on the mallow, set aside and let design dry for 15 minutes.
