what you need
- 7 cups water
- 1 package (16 oz.) split peas
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4 in slices (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 2 medium stalks of celery, finely chopped (1 cup)
- 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 ham bone or 1 (2 lb.) ham shank or a (2 lb.) smoked ham hock
make it
Mix all ingredients except ham in 4-5 quart slow cooker. Add ham.
Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours or until peas are tender.
Remove ham from slow cooker and pull meat from bone. Stir ham into soup. Stir well before serving.
Notes
Instead of all water you could add chicken broth for some of the water.
