what you need
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup shortening or oil
- 1/2 cup buttermilk with rounded teaspoon soda
- 6 heaping teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tsp. vanilla
make it
Mix all ingredients and then dump in 1 cup boiling water.
Bake in round pans for 25 minutes or cupcakes for 13 minutes at 350 degrees F. Bake mini cupcakes for 9 minutes.
Notes
The buttermilk gives this cake a most unique flavor. I use the buttermilk powder and mix according to the package instructions.
