what you need
- 1 loaf day-old French bread
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
- 5 eggs
- 1-1/4 cups milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Raspberry flavored syrup
- Fresh/frozen raspberries
make it
1. Coat a 9x13 dish with nonstick cooking spray. Slice the bread into 1-1/2" thick slices. Using a sharp knife, cut a 2" slit horizontally into one side of each slice, DO NOT CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH, creating a pocket into each.
2. Spoon 2 heaping teaspoons of chocolate chips into the pocket of each bread slice & press to close. Place filled slices in baking dish.
3. In medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, & vanilla. Pour mixture evenly over the bread, turning the pieces over to coat completely. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
4. Preheat the oven to 400-degrees. Bake the stuffed bread, UNCOVERED, for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
5. Cool slightly, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry flavored syrup and fresh/frozen raspberries.
6. I have used strawberries/strawberry syrup, blueberries/blueberry sryup, but the raspberry combination seems to go best with the chocolate.
Also, I have used the raspberry flavored chips for the "stuffing" and used chocolate syrup to over the top for a variation. Enjoy!!
Notes
This is one of those recipes that I save for Holiday mornings or when we are having company.
