what you need
- 1 large can crushed pineapple
- 1 large can cherry pie filling, I prefer Comstock
- 1 box yellow cake mix, any brand
- 1 and 1/2 sticks of salted sweet cream butter (not margarine)
make it
Spray 9x12-inch cake pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Dump crushed pineapple into pan, juice and all. Spread around with clean fingers to get even distribution. Dump cherry pie filling over pineapple. I spoon it out and use my fingers to distribute it evenly. Dump cake mix, in powdered form, over the top. Do this as evenly as possible. Cut butter over top in small pats. Cover the cake as well as you can.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. Top will be golden brown and fruits will be slightly bubbly.
Notes
I have used one stick of butter at times, it is still good, but not as crunchy.
One person I gave this recipe to substituted the cherries for blueberry pie filling and said it was amazing.
This cake is very rich and delicious. I always get compliments on it.
Serve with ice cream or whipped cream to even out the richness of the cake. It's called a dump cake because it's so easy, you just dump the stuff in it. My mother told me about it and I am sure it's more popular than I realize.
