Makes: 12 servings more or less Total Time: 45 min
Category: Sauces/Marinades Sub Category: Sauces and Marinades

what you need
  • 2 cups chopped onions or use minced onions (I love the flavor from them)
  • 3 lb. hamburger
  • 24 oz. tomato puree
  • 24 oz. tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup mustard
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 2 Tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. salt to taste
make it
Sauté onions in a few drops of oil until clear; then brown the hamburger with the onions.

Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes.
Original recipe did not call for oil, but our test kitchen used it in the sauté; we also substituted 4 cloves minced fresh garlic for the garlic powder. If garlic powder is used, season to taste; some may find 3 tablespoons overpowering, but the original recipe is included for authenticity.

Recipe may be cut in half if a large amount is not needed or freeze leftover in small containers to use in portions.

You can add more chili or garlic powder according to your own personal taste.
