what you need
  • 1 pkg. Pillsbury Vanilla Cake Mix with Pudding
  • 1 stick butter or margarine
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
make it
1. Make cake mix according to instructions on the back of the package in greased and floured 9x13 pan. Then let cool.

2. Put butter, white sugar, brown sugar, buttermilk, and baking soda in a saucepan with high sides. Stir every few minutes. When the mixture reaches 236 degrees or balls slightly when put into cool water it is done cooking.

3. Remove from heat and spread on COOL cake, the mixture will cool and become firm.
Notes
~Use candy thermometer for the temperature of the caramel.
~If caramel doesn't come out right put in a dish and add nuts (if desired)... voila instant caramel squares. As for the cake put icing from a can on it.
