Mag's Plantation Chili

what you need
  • 1 lb. hamburger (or ground turkey), browned and drained
  • 1 Tbsp. dried onion flakes or 1/2 large onion, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp. chili powder to suit your taste
  • 1 can chili beans (like Brooks)
  • 1 can tomato soup, diluted
  • 1 can diced tomatoes with juice
  • 1 can mushrooms
  • 1 can cut green beans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1-2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
make it
Brown meat and onions. Then mix all ingredients together.

Cook for 30 minutes on medium to low heat, if you are in a hurry. For best results simmer on the lowest heat for at least 2 to 3 hours. Stir occasionally.
Notes
*Make a double batch, freeze the leftovers. You’ll have a great soup ready for unexpected guests.

** Add 1 cup of cooked macaroni and change the entire recipe into Chili-Mac.
This recipe came from a prisoner I taught GED classes to in an Indiana County Jail. His grandmother made it on the plantation.
