what you need
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. dried buttermilk powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • Add-ins: 1/2 cup dried fruit
make it
Mix first five ingredients in a bowl. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles cornmeal. Stir in the add-ins and store until ready for use.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix scone mix with 1/2 cup cold water. Stir with a spoon until dough begins to come together, but is not sticky. Add more water, one tablespoon at a time until dough comes together. Divide into two balls and pat first ball into a 5-inch round. Score into 6 wedges. Repeat with remaining dough. Place scones on baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until tops are just brown.
Can store for months.
