  • In medium saucepan, over medium heat, mix sugar, corn syrup and butter. Continue stirring until the mixture comes to a “ploppy” boil. Time for 7 minutes – do not stir.
  • Add condensed milk. Mix well, and continue stirring over medium heat. When the mixture comes again to a “ploppy” boil, time for 13 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Take off heat, add vanilla, mix well and pour into a well-buttered 8 by 8 inch glass pan. Cool overnight at room temperature. Cut into bite-sized squares and wrap in squares of waxed paper.

Special Equipment Needed


If the heat is too high the caramels will be hard. After the mixture comes to the "ploppy" boil for the first time and you are waiting for the 7 minutes to expire, use this time period to butter the 8 x 8 glass pan. I use "waxed patty paper" squares to wrap the caramels. These make wonderful hostess gifts.
