  • 1. CUSTARD: Stir custard and sugar in medium saucepan. Gradually stir in milk until smooth. Stirring constantly, cook on medium heat until mixture comes to full boil. Remove from heat. Pour into bowl. Cool in refrigerator while making Jell-O.
  • 2. JELL-O: Stir 2 cups boiling water into gelatin in medium bowl at least 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Break each ladyfinger apart, place in 3 quart serving bowl and cover with warm Jell-O. Refrigerate until firm and then add cool custard on top.
  • 3. TOPPING: Mix whipped topping mix, milk and vanilla in large bowl with electric mixer on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed for 4 minutes or until topping thickens and forms peaks. Swirl this over the set custard. Just before serving, sprinkle the decorations over the surface to decorate.

Special Equipment Needed

This makes trifle exactly like the Bird’s Trifle Mixes that are sold in the U.K. I got tired of asking my in-laws to send them over, so based on a box of Bird’s Trifle Mix, I figured out how to make it using the Kraft products here in the U.S. (Bird’s Trifle Mix, Bird’s Custard, Jell-O and Dream Whip are all owned by Kraft). QUICK AND EASY IDEAS 1. Add a can of well drained fruit to the Jell-O with the ladyfingers and set in the Jell-O, to give 8 generous servings. 2. For special occasions, make up the Trifle topping using less milk and pipe onto the custard. Decorate with fresh fruit or crushed amaretto biscuits. 3. Drizzle a little orange flavor liqueur over ladyfingers and leave to soak for approximately 15 minutes before adding the Jell-O. Decorate with a few toasted flaked almonds and berries.
