  • Whisk flour with salt and powder. Beat butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in flour mix until combined. Gather dough and divide it in half. Form each half into a disk. Wrap tightly and refrigerate 4 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out one dough disk to 3/16 to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into stars with a 2" cutter. Place on ungreased sheets and sprinkle with decorating sugar.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Repeat with remaining dough and scraps.

Special Equipment Needed


To make gingermen: make dough as above, only add 1 Tbsp. ginger, 2 tsp. cocoa, and 1/2 tsp. each cinnamon and white pepper. Roll half of dough 1/4-inch thick. Cut shapes with a 3-inch cutter. Repeat with second half and scraps. Bake 12 minutes and cool. Mix 1 cup powder sugar with 1 Tbsp. lemon juice and 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Add 1/2 tsp. water if needed. Pipe and outline onto edges.
