  • Rinse apples. In saucepan combine apples and 3 cups water cover. Simmer 20 to 25 minutes and then drain. Combine apples, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Stir in cheese. Set aside.
  • Mix flour and salt; cut in lard till mixture resembles size of small peas. Sprinkle water, 1 tablespoon at a time, over flour mixture; toss with a fork; push to side of bowl. Repeat till all is moistened.
  • Form into a ball. Roll on floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness; cut into 4 - inch circles. Place scant tablespoonful filling on half - moon shape; seal edges with fork.
  • In a heavy skillet, heat 1/4 inch fat to 375 degrees. Fry pies till brown, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Drain well on paper toweling. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.
