Grammie's Italian Tomato Sauce & Meatballs

  • In a large pot, add puree and then fill that can 3/4 up with water, and also add to pot. Put in tomato paste, then fill each empty can with water twice, scraping the sides of the cans, and add to pot. Add grating cheese, and other seasonings. Stir to mix. Add more water if the sauce seems too thick. It's better to add too much water, and let it boil down, than have it too thick.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then lower heat and simmer with a lid for about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Meatballs: Mix all together and make balls and drop into sauce that is simmering. Let them sit in sauce about 20 minutes before stirring.


If using meatballs, add them raw, to the sauce, after all sauce ingredients are added. If adding loose hamburger meat, brown the meat first, in a separate pan, but don't cook all the way. Drain oil from pan before adding to sauce.
