  • Scald milk, and then cool. Add yeast to 1/4 cup warm water, let stand 5 minutes. Add yeast mixture to milk. Stir in 1 1/2 cups flour, keep warm until bubbly.
  • Blend in beaten eggs, sugar, salt, and melted butter. Add fruits dredged with ¼ cup flour and juice of 1 lemon. Sift 5 3/4 cups flour and add.
  • Knead on floured board. Put in greased bowl and let rise until doubled. Punch down and form*. Let rise.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes.


*To form dough, separate dough into 2 equal portions. Form each section into a large oval then fold the oval over not quite in half. You can sprinkle sifted powdered sugar on top while still warm or make a thin frosting of powdered sugar, milk and almond flavoring to pour over the top. Decorate with candied cherries.
