  • Mix flour, salt, sugar, and Crisco together. Dissolve yeast in 4 cups of warm water, mix so yeast dissolves. Pour mixture into flour mixture. Then add 5 1/4 cups of warm water, mix.
  • Let rise until double in size. Punch down (knead) and let rise again until the dough doubles in size again. Work the dough, shape into thin loaves (about 8 inches long and 5 inches wide). Make a cross over them; slit the loaves lengthwise with a sharp razor blade.
  • Bake at 375 degrees until golden brown, about 1 hour.

Notes

They should look like the Italian Bread you buy in stores.
