  • 1. Lightly butter bottom and sides of medium sized bowl. Set aside.
  • 2. Mix yeast and warm water in small bowl or cup. Let stand 10 minutes.
  • 3. Mix butter and milk in small saucepan. Scald mixture. Remove from heat and pour into a clean medium-sized mixing bowl. Add sugar. Let cool until just warm enough to put your hands in it.
  • 4. Add egg, yeast, salt, 1/2 cup flour to butter mixture. Mix well, will be lumpy. Gradually fold in remaining flour in 1/2 cup increments. Add flour until dough is no longer wet and sticky. Total flour will be about 3 cups.
  • 5. Remove from bowl and knead with flour as needed until a soft dough forms.
  • 6. Place in buttered bowl and cover with towel. Let rise approximately 60 minutes or until dough doubles in size. Place in a moderately warm area of the kitchen, like next to a stove. This will help the dough rise. Do not place in a direct heat source or dough will cook and become ruined.
  • 7. When dough is risen, remove from bowl and place on a lightly-floured counter top. Knead for 1 minute, flour as needed.
  • 8. Separate dough into 12 same-sized small balls. Place in a 13x9 non-stick pan (or lightly-greased pan if necessary).
  • 9. Cover and set aside pan as before and let rise approx. 30 minutes or until dough is doubled in size. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • 10. When dough is finished rising, place in oven and cook 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 11. Remove from oven. Let cool.

Special Equipment Needed


A warm oven will keep the kitchen warmer in the winter so the dough only takes the specified time to raise. In the summer, the kitchen will most likely be warm enough without the oven. You don't want the dough to rise too fast.
