  • Heat oil in deep fryer to 365 degrees F. In a large bowl mix together 1 cup flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, red peppers and baking soda. Make a well into the center of mixture and add bacon drippings, beaten egg, buttermilk and hot pepper sauce. Mix well. Pour batter into tall glass or cup.
  • Rinse hot links, pat dry. Place into bag with flour coat remove excessive flour place on stick and dip into batter (remove with a twisting motion) Shake of excess.
  • Deep fry a few at a time being careful not to let them touch. Remove when browned. Drain on paper towel. May be kept in a warm oven until ready to serve (no longer than 15 minutes). Serve with mustard and ketchup.

Notes

Omit crushed red peppers and hot pepper sauce and use regular hot dogs for those who don't want it spicy.
