  • Dice onions and saute them in large frying pan with butter and margarine. Sprinkle sugar and garlic powder over onions. Do not burn, there should be enough butter and margarine left to go into the soup.
  • In the mean time, cut up slices of bread into squares and make enough to cover the pan. Add the beef broth to the onions, then add the bread squares. Heat until boiling.
  • Reduce heat and add Provalone cheese. Let the cheese melt slightly, then turn off heat. Put into bowls and add another slice of cheese on top, if you wish.

This recipe was given to me by a chef at the Brigantine Hotel, in New Jersey in 1980. It still is the best French Onion Soup I have ever tasted.
