This recipe is very low cost to make. About 25 years ago, I entered this recipe in the Detroit News contest for low cost meals. This recipe made it in the top 25 recipes, and was published with my picture in a insert that they made for their newspapers.
My mother and father both learned two different ways to make this. They used a one pan method, and different cheeses. I invented the 2 pan method and rinsing the pasta after cooking it, it takes out a lot of the starchiness. And you don't burn the cheese on the bottom of the pan. It is better blended. I prefer a stronger cheese, so I use Kraft New York Sharp Cheddar cheese.
