Excellent old cookie recipe, keeps well and stays soft if kept in covered container. I don't flatten mine; I dip walnut sized cookie ball in sugar, place on cookie sheet and sprinkle with a few drops of cold water. Cookie flattens as it bakes. Don't over-bake, cool for a few minutes on sheet then place on cooling rack. I use butter instead of shortening and also add different spices to mine: nutmeg, cardamon, allspice and cloves are favorites. Great with coffee, hot chocolate or warm cider.
