  • Soak basmati rice in water, clean & drain the water then keep it aside. In electric rice cooker pour 1 1/2 cups of water & allow it to boil. (Don’t add too much water otherwise it would become paste).
  • Meanwhile, put oil in a pan & cook it in microwave for 30 sec. Then add masalas (pattai, cloves, and brinji leaves), onion, and green chilies. Mix well & cook in microwave for 30 sec. Add ginger garlic paste, spinach (palak) & peas. Mix well & cook in microwave for 1 min. Then add the rice to the mixture & mix well.
  • Put the rice mixture in the boiling water. You can add garam masal if required. Add required salt. If needed you can add some ghee (clarified butter). Close the lid & leave it to cook. It will take 15-20 min to cook. Remove and discard brinji leaves. Garnish it with tomato.


You can use other spinach, something which looks like palak (with larger leaves). Instead of maslas you can also add garam masala (but it should not be deep fried). You can also make without adding peas. You can add grated carrots and cabbage pieces. Do not put more than 1/4 tsp. of ginger garlic paste. It can also be cooked in a stove. Rice - water ratio is 1:1.5 (measurement should not be like regular rice as 1:2).
