  • Mix warm water, shortening, salt, sugar, molasses and egg together. Add yeast mixture and rye flour. Mix well and add remaining white flour a cup at a time.
  • Turn out on floured board and kneed until no longer sticky. Put in greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled--about 4 hours. Punch down and make into loaves. Put in greased bread pans and let rise until doubled.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from pans at once and grease tops and sides of bread. Let cool.


This is a favorite of my family as it is sweet and moist. This bread also freezes well.
