  • Pick over beans to remove dirt and small stones and rinse in colander; place beans into Dutch oven and cover with enough water. Let soak overnight.
  • Drain and cover beans with fresh water and simmer for 2 hours or until tender (check beans and add water as needed).
  • Chop bacon, bell peppers, onions and garlic; add to beans.
  • Take a ladle full of bean juice and put in small custard dish along with bouillon cube; let sit until it can be mixed thoroughly. Cook for another hour.
  • Add liquid smoke and BBQ sauce. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste; continue cooking for another 45 minutes to 1 hour.
