Spicy Sweet Steak with Peppers and Onions

  • Cut steak into 6 equal pieces. In a gallon Ziploc bag combine: flour with salt, pepper, red pepper, and garlic powder. Distribute evenly. Dredge steak pieces in the seasoned flour.
  • On med-hi heat, heat a large frying pan, and add oil. Brown steak on both sides. Pour in the consomme, water and 2 Tbsp. of the soy sauce. Stir, cover, reduce heat to a med-low and simmer for 1 hour 30 minutes stirring occasionally.* Stir in brown sugar and catsup. Add bell pepper and onion. Cover and continue to simmer for 30 minutes.*
  • In a small bowl combine the remaining Tbsp. of soy sauce with the cornstarch. Bring heat up to medium. Push steak and vegetables to one side of the pan. Whisk in the soy sauce-cornstarch mixture. Stirring constantly bring gravy up to a boil and cook 1 min. Lower heat to low/warm. Distribute steak and vegetables in the gravy. Serve over hot cooked buttered rice.


* 2 cans of beef broth can be substituted for the consomme, but omit the 1 cup of water. ** You may add up to 1 cup more of water if liquid dissipates more than half.
