This recipe calls for salsa - this makes spicier beans. If you don't like spicy, I'd advise to keep it out. I usually do not put the salsa in as my husband does not like spicy food.
If I'm in a hurry, I'll just bring the mixture to a slow boil, and then simmer until slightly thick. Still tastes very good, just not as thick as simmering for a longer period of time. Just make sure to stir often during the boiling part so as not to burn them!!
