I have been making this salad for years and if my refrigerator space is limited I mix the mayo, sugar and parmesan the night before and put the salad together just before guests arrive. It is great if you can make it ahead though.....there're always some other last items that pop up. I put chopped broccoli or cauliflower(or both) between the lettuce and red onions, have used different kinds of lettuce and I don't use the cheese and tomatoes either. However, I think I'll try it that way next time.
