Make sure to let cool completely or caramel will be too chewy; great with or without nuts! Next time I want to try it with semi-sweet morsels instead of baking squares for an easier recipe; also, I want to try it with pecans instead of walnuts for a "turtle treat"!

has anyone tried this with a different cake type - like maybe devil's food or butter yellow?

Very good!! We ate them while they were still warm and they were pretty messy. Maybe try refrigerating before cutting?

This was a very good recipe, especially since it still tasted great after overcooking it 30min.

I have made this recipe numerous times over the past several years. It is always a hit with family and friends, and very simple to make - the most difficult and time-consuming task was opening all the caramels.
