This is nothing like a real English Trifle. The only way it resembles it is the layering...but that's it. Real English trifle uses Jello (American version is very similar) with fruit mixed into it (usually strawberries or raspberries), custard (you can even get the powdered instant custard in the international aisle in your local grocery store), slices of sponge cake orladyfingers, and whipped cream on top. In other words, this is absolutely NOTHING like an English Trifle. It is probably an interesting dessert...but a total disservice to the deliciousness that is trifle.

great! except instead of using vanilla pudding, I used custard- the true traditional English way!

What a delicious and easy recipe. This was such a huge hit at my house, my family devoured it. When I went to make this I thought I had all the ingredients but I had no peaches. So I used mandarin oranges instead and I thought raspberry jam would go better with that than the strawberry and it definitely did. I can't wait to make this again using different fruit and jams.

Since I am allergic to strawberries & peaches, I'm going to make it with lemon pudding, orange marmalade and mandarin orange slices.
