What You Need

pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, broken into pieces

3/4

cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter or margarine

1-1/2

cups sugar

eggs

tsp. vanilla

2-1/2

cups flour, divided

tsp. baking soda

1/4

tsp. salt

1-1/2

cups water

Make It

PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating with electric mixer on low speed after each addition until well blended. Add vanilla; mix well.

ADD 1/2 cup of the flour, the baking soda and salt; beat until well blended. Add remaining 2 cups flour alternately with water, beating until well blended after each addition. Pour evenly into 2 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.

BAKE 35 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min.; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire racks. Spread with your favorite frosting, if desired. (NOTE: Nutrition information is for unfrosted cake.)

Variation

Prepare batter as directed; pour into greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Bake 55 min. or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan. Frost as desired.

High Altitude Directions

Prepare and bake as directed, increasing flour to 2-2/3 cups and water to 1-3/4 cups.

I had to use 8" pans instead of 8" so had to increase baking time by 10 minutes. It was still very moist. My first time making a "scratch" cake, and it turned out well.

Originally, I made this cake back in Sept. 04 and have since made it several times. This recipe was both simple, who wants an everyday "box" cake, and delicious. It was so good in fact, the first time I made it, that it never had icing put on it. We ate it plain with coffee or milk. I'm making it again, but this time we're going over the top! I'm going to fill the middle with a fresh, homemade, cranberry sauce and then ice it with a cream cheese, chocolate icing (if I can find my recipe for the frosting).

This recipe was very easy to make. Only a very inexperienced person could mess this up. It was super moist and super delicious. Definetly a top five cake ever.

Tried this recipe for my son's birthday since I had no cake mix on hand. Figured with the high rating, it would be good. This is the worst chocolate cake I've ever tasted...dry and not chocolatey. Even my tried & true homemade frosting didn't help. You know it's bad when 5 20year old guys don't eat it. Unfortunately, I'm throwing the whole cake in the garbage.

It was a beautful cake and very good . My whole family had some of it and they loved. I took some to work and everyone that tasted wanted the recipe so I gave it to them and they went home to make it they caled me and said it was the best cake they ever tasted in their life.
