Beautiful Butterfly Cake

I made this and a famly member took a chunck out of the top of one of the wings so it had rounded wings on top and at the bottom. I thought it looked better that way.

What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) yellow cake mix

1/3

cup raspberry jam

OREO Cookies

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed, divided

Food coloring

cup fruit-flavored sweetened rice cereal

Decorations: assorted ring-shaped hard candies and Mini OREO Bite Size Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

Make It

PREPARE cake batter and bake in two 9-inch round baking pans as directed on package. Cool 10 min.; remove to wire racks. Cool completely.

CUT cakes crosswise in half. Spread two of the cake halves with jam; top with remaining two cake halves to form two stacks. To assemble, arrange cookies in center of large board or tray with edges slightly overlapping to form the "butterfly's body," securing cookies to each other with small amount of the whipped topping. Arrange cake stacks around body to resemble the butterfly's wings.

TINT remaining whipped topping with food coloring as desired. Spread onto cakes. Decorate with whipped topping, cereal, candies and cookies. Store in refrigerator.

Variation

For a refreshing citrus cake, prepare as directed using lemon cake mix and substituting orange marmalade for the raspberry jam.

Substitute

Substitute any flavor cake mix for the yellow cake mix.

Since I knew it would be a while before I would serve the cake, I used whipped frosting (from a can) and put the oreos on just before serving and it turned out great!

the design is really cute, but by the time we got there, the decorations were melting off. I was the centerpiece of the table and everyone loved it, but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

I made this cake for my daughter's 1st birhtday this year and it turned out so great! It was not only beautiful but delicious too. I got so many good comments from family and friends. I would definatly try to do this cake again--but next year I will change it up a bit and make it into a lady bug instead!

All my cakes are failures, but for the first time, I was able to make my son a beautiful birthday cake! This recipe was extremely easy, and the cake was delicious. I skipped the jam and used just one thick layer of cake, and I used lots of extra Cook Whip. What a hit! Thank you!!!!

I made this for a birthday party and it was a hit! I found raspberry zingers and used teddy grahams to decorate the wings along with a few colorful licorice and the cereal. dyed the coolwhip w/ 2 drops of red food dye. although i used 2 8 oz. tubs of cool whip and did not "ice" until an hour before serving.

This cake was excellent! I made it for my daughter's birthday using Zingers for the body & decorating the wings with colored sugar. Tastes even better than it looks. All the kids loved it.

Excellent cake. Made it for my daughter's birthday and was a big hit with everyone. Very light---loved the jelly mixed in the batter and the cool whip makes a great, less sugary icing. Will try it again. Highlyl recommended for a fun cake!

My daughter saw this cake in your magazine and wanted it for her birthday. We used a strawberry cake mix and used the strawberry flavored cool whip instead of tinting it. We used sprinkles instead of the fruity pebbles, and I let my daughter and son use M&M mini's to decorate. My husband loved it and he is not a cake person. Next time I will try the Jello-poke method instead of the jam. We loved it!
