Beautiful Butterfly Cake

I made this and a famly member took a chunck out of the top of one of the wings so it had rounded wings on top and at the bottom. I thought it looked better that way.

What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) yellow cake mix

1/3

cup raspberry jam

OREO Cookies

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed, divided

Food coloring

cup fruit-flavored sweetened rice cereal

Decorations: assorted ring-shaped hard candies and Mini OREO Bite Size Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

Make It

PREPARE cake batter and bake in two 9-inch round baking pans as directed on package. Cool 10 min.; remove to wire racks. Cool completely.

CUT cakes crosswise in half. Spread two of the cake halves with jam; top with remaining two cake halves to form two stacks. To assemble, arrange cookies in center of large board or tray with edges slightly overlapping to form the "butterfly's body," securing cookies to each other with small amount of the whipped topping. Arrange cake stacks around body to resemble the butterfly's wings.

TINT remaining whipped topping with food coloring as desired. Spread onto cakes. Decorate with whipped topping, cereal, candies and cookies. Store in refrigerator.

Variation

For a refreshing citrus cake, prepare as directed using lemon cake mix and substituting orange marmalade for the raspberry jam.

Substitute

Substitute any flavor cake mix for the yellow cake mix.

This was great!!! Cool Whip now comes flavored in strawberry...so no tinting is required!!! I used strawberry jam instead of raspberry and it turned out wonderful. I plan on making this again, this time for easter!!!

I'd like to suggest ladyfingers for the "body" of the butterfly. I think they'd be easier to deal with than stacked Oreos. They could be frosted with chocolate frosting to make the body dark. My three granddaughters are visiting for Easter, and we'll make this cake together!! GREAT fun!

This is SUPER !!!!!! i have been looking for an original cake for my daughters 9 th b-day party and this is IT!!!!! She loves butterflies and lemon so thevarriation will be sweeeeeeet!! for her (she doesnt like chocolate) thanks!!!!!!

i had to make this recipe as an assignment for class, and it was great! the only thing was that as i was making it, i started to get kind of frustrated and very worried because i thought that i had forgotten to get the icing or something to go on top. But i soon figured out that the cool-whip was the topping! whoops!

My Grand-daughter loved this cake. However instead of using the large Oreo's for the body I used 4 Twinkies. Using icing to hold the top two to the bottom two. Made the cake easier to cut.

My 11 year old daughter and I made this cake last night for her birthday party. We used Chocolate Cake and Chocolage whipped frosting (choc cool whip would have been easier to spread). We had such a good time decorating it and it looks really super!!! I love a recipe that is kid friendly and looks impressive!!!! We are all about presentation.

This cake was DELICIOUS. It was so cute and very easy too. The best thing about it was it wasn't too sweet. Using cool-whip made the cake taste just right. Great for kids because the sugar content isn't as high because you use cool-whip.
