what you need

pkg. (10 oz. each) frozen prepared pound cake, thawed

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed

4 to 6

drops red or yellow food coloring

miniature sugar cake donuts

thin pretzel sticks

black string licorice

assorted jelly or hard candies

Make It

TRIM rounded tops off pound cakes. Stack 2 of the cakes together using whipped topping in between the layers to hold together. (This is the back of the fire truck.)

CUT 1/3 off the end of the remaining cake. Lay the 2/3 portion of cake in front of and level with the bottom of stacked pound cakes. Place the 1/3 portion vertically on top to form an L-shape against the 2 stacked cakes. (This will form the cab of the truck and be slightly higher than the 2 stacked pound cakes. See photograph.)

TINT whipped topping with red or yellow food coloring until desired color is achieved. Frost entire fire truck. Attach 3 donuts on each side of the truck for wheels. Add pretzel sticks to create ladders on the sides and back of truck.

LAY licorice on top of the truck to make a water hose. Outline windows and doors with licorice. Place assorted candies on top of the cab as lights and on front of the truck for headlights. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

My husband is a fire fighter and I made this for a going away party. It was a hit. It was kind of hard to make, trying to make it exactally like the pic, but still a hit!!

this is a FUN WAY to enjoy a recipe like this one and not go and by one from the store. Its chepper this way too.

My 5 year old has been my little "firefighter" for three years running now...he absolutely LOVED helping me with this!!! This recipe will become a family favorite, I'm sure.

This cake is great! I did a couple things different, though. I used strawberry cool whip (still adding some more food coloring to make it darker.) I couldn't find string licorice, so I used fruit streamers (sold where you find fruit roll-ups.) I used oreos for the wheels. Also, check with your local fire department and you might be able to get a real truck at your party. Our fire department even let the kids (and parents) go for a ride in the truck! The cake was yummy and easy to make. It didn't take as long as the recipe says. Took me 1 hour to thaw the cakes and 1 hour to decorate.

My son totally loves fire trucks. I plan to make this cake for his fourth birthday party coming up. I didn't have a clue as to the theme of the party until I saw this cake. Thank you!!!
