I am also English.I agree on the fact that a sheppard's pie is made with lamb. With beef it's called a cottage pie in England. The old way of making this recipe is not to use cheese, but cheese in it is very popular over there in England these past many years. There have been so many varies in this recipe over the years, but I think the main idea is to make something that pleases and nourises the entire family. I also agree using a can of mixed vegetables is a slight to the true taste to a yummy dish ,but if it works for you to ensure a meal in a hurry and you don't have time to peel and slice ,then it's better than a burger down at the closest fast food place. Really good, fast and filling. Only I
substituted ground mild sausage for the
beef, and used instant (3 cheese) mashed
potatoes and added some diced onions as
well.I did have to add a bit more gravy than
called for, but will add this to our
menu!

My son and his friends eat this with no leftovers. I love the fact that is actually good for them and they are eating healthy.

If you are really in a hurry, you could probably use instant mashed potatoes.

I used the mashed potatoes in a bag.

This is definitely NOT English Shepherd's Pie; nothing like it. I lived in England for 6 years and never had it prepared this way, with cheese and sour cream and ketsup, of all things. Someone needs to visit England and have real Shepherd's Pie. Your so-called Updated Shepherd's Pie sounds really horrible. Also, mixed vegetables? I never had it any other way than just peas and sometimes a little carrot in it. Better get it right before you put the Union Jack on your recipes.

My husband LOVED this recipe as did I. I ended up substituting pre-prepared mashed potatoes that come in a crock because I did not have the real thing handy and it still tasted marvelous!!!!
