Moist Caramel Apple Cake

Inspired by a childhood favorite, this recipe reinvents the caramel apple as a cake, with fresh, tangy chopped apples baked into a treat that’s a whole lot easier to eat.

What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) yellow cake mix

pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla or French Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding

cup water

eggs

1/3

cup oil

Granny Smith apples (1 lb.), peeled, coarsely chopped

KRAFT Caramels

Tbsp. milk

Make It

HEAT oven to 350ºF.

BEAT first 5 ingredients in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Stir in apples. Pour into greased and floured 12-cup fluted tube pan or 10-inch tube pan.

BAKE 50 min. to 1 hour or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan 15 min. Loosen cake from side of pan; invert onto wire rack. Gently remove pan. Cool cake completely. Transfer to plate.

MICROWAVE caramels and milk in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 1-1/2 min. or until caramels are completely melted and sauce is smooth, stirring every 30 sec. Cool 10 min. or until slightly thickened. Drizzle over cake.

Cooking Know-How

Do not use cake mix with pudding in the mix. To avoid soggy cake, drizzle caramel sauce over cake just before serving.

Special Extra

Serve topped with thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping or vanilla ice cream.

I didn't have a yellow cake mix, so used spice, with butterscotch instant pudding mix. I added 2 apples, chopped, 1/2 cup raisins and 1/2 cup walnuts, mixed with 1 Tbsp cake mix reserved to coat them. I used caramel bits, ( to save inwrapping the caramels,) mixed with milk and a pinch of cinnamon. . It got rave reviews,( and can be varied many ways, obviously)!

This cake is indeed moist & delicious. Ater reading ALL of the reviews I decided to make a few adjustments to the recipe – I added 1/3 cup of spiced rum & 2/3 cups of water – I also added 1/4 cup of brown sugar and sprinkled it generously with cinnamon. I made two cakes; one I took to a friend’s house for dessert it paired nicely with vanilla ice cream – Think apple pie ala mode the other I took to church for coffee hour. Everyone’s reaction was the same; they LOVED it.

One of the best and simple desserts I've made. I actually made it quite a few times between Thanksgiving and New Years because it's such a hit with everyone. AWESOME!!!

I made this recipe for my son and boyfriend. My boyfriend made some oohs and ahs when he ate this cake. My boyfriend came close to proposing.

I made this for a dinner at work. It was very easy and everyone loved it. It went over so well and everyone wanted the recipe. It also looks really nice--looks like you have worked really hard but is so easy. I would recommend this recipe.

my 7 year old son likes it so much that he has asked me to make it for his birthday... this is the second year in a row that my family has asked me to make this cake for thanksgiving.

I made this for Easter last year after another cake that I made failed to set in the fridge overnight. This cake was super easy to make (I added some Green Apple slices on the top of the cake under the caramel to make it extra special!), I pretty much already had everything for it. It was a huge success at Easter everyone loved it! My Mom even thought it was awesome!! My husband loves it so much that he is always asking me to make it. Everyone wants the recipe and can't believe how moist it is!!
