Made this for dinner last night. I had read previous reviews about it being bland so I was prepared to add some extras. I used some mixed veggies instead of peas. Used the whole can of soup. I also added onions to the beef while cooking and some extra garlic powder, salt, lots of pepper, seasoning blend, and a dash of cumin. I also put a few pats of butter on top of the rice and covered in tinfoil in the oven for a few minutes then added the cheese and cooked till it melted. It was really good, all 3 kids cleaned their plates!
I give this 5 stars using my modifications. I was worried that it might be bland if I followed the recipe as is so I gave it four stars. I added some chopped onion when I browned the hamburger. I used 1/2 salt and 1/2 mixed seasoning instead of the thyme since my husband doesn't like thyme. But I think what made it was the addition of 1/4 cup tomato sauce and 1tablespoon steak sauce. I used brown rice since that's what I had in the fridge. I couldn't stop eating it.
I like to embellish so here are some of my additions. The beef I sprinkled with garlic, pepper, and salt. I added onions green peppers, and fresh celery until while the meet was browning and let them get soft but firm. I cooked it in a rice steamer. (You can use beef broth in the rice steamer if you want; sometimes I do sometimes not) I followed the recipe but I used Italian style green beens instead of the peas. You can prepare in advance put in the freg. an bake when you get home. Everybody loved it!
This was super bland. We jazzed the meat up to make it taste like meatloaf and used some basmati rice, but still was pretty bleh.
my family love this recipe! It is now a favorite at our house!
Terrible....a huge waste of food. This would take so much tweaking that in the end it is not worth the hassle.
My family thought this recipe was terrible. My husband kindly described it as "what I imagine the worst English food to taste like". I will never make anything resembling it again.
This was great - my boyfriend just loved it. I added onion while the hamburger was browning, used the entire can of Cream of Celery soup, and used a sundried tomato five cheese blend for the topping. This recipe is definetly a keeper!
This was AWFUL! My family hated it. I even spiced it up a bit and it was still awful. What a waste!
I agree with everyone else, this was very bland. I even loaded it up with spices. The rice and meat was just too much and it just came out with no flavor. It has a lot of good stuff to it for a wholesome one dish meal, but I don't even think it's worth tweaking.
