11-19-05 ROLL TIDE !!! We had our Thanksgiving meal with my husband's family today. A HIT !!!!! I did add to this, I added half a can more cream of celery and I left out the thyme, but I added onions and bell pepper and creole seasoning to the mixture, and used garlic powder also. WILL USE AGAIN AND AGAIN !!!!!!
I liked this recipe but I do agree that it was a little bland for my wife and I. I will try this recipe again omitting the soup and milk and replacing them with frozen stirfry vegitables and a jar of sweet&sour sauce(for an oriental twist).
Just a comment for the person who didn't understand what Prep Time means. It means the time to gather the ingredients as listed, including the time to prep the ingredients. If you put the Minute Rice on first and then chop the garlic and you used the packaged grated cheese, it can be done easliy in 5 minutes or less. The only change I would make is using the quick cook Brown Rice for more nutritional value. I hope this helps. : )
My husband and I aren't too fond of celery soup, so I used cream of mushroom (low sodium, low fat of course) and it was actually pretty good. I also left out the peas. and served it with a nice green salad. We really enjoyed it.
I have seen a variation on this with the ground beef mixture being combined with green beans and topped with instant mashed potatoes. I made this version, but the ingredients seemed bland, so I added a can of diced tomatoes with green chiles for some kick. Another variation would be to add a can of tomato soup instead of the celery soup, and be sure to add some herbs that appeal to you.
Blah! and whoever came up with a 5 minute prep time must be on another planet. Get real to cook ground beef, and make rice....I don't think so.
Also found this recipe to be a bit bland just by the description of the ingredients, so I spiced it up by stir frying an onion, garlic, 1/4 green pepper in some olive oil. Added salt, oregano and a bay leaf and some chopped fresh cherry tomatoes to the beef. Then followed the instructions. This was unbelievably good.
