I used deer meat with this recipe; that is probably why it was dry. Other than that it was good. I would use a little less rice though. Also I used oregano since I did not have any thyme--not recommended, too strong.
Thank you for your ideas. I had ground beef and need something new. I went on line and found this recipe. My two-year-old triplets are not big fans of rice so I used Idaho Southwest style mashed potatoes instead. I also used cream of mushroom with roasted garlic, and corn. I also was out of milk so I used sour cream like someone else had suggested. I impressed my husband and myself; the kids ate it up too. I'm usually not one for making things up as I go, but tonight was definitely an exception. Thank you all for your comments to read and the basic recipe that I tweaked. Michelle
I used cream of mushroom instead of the cream of celery. Tastes fantastic! A new favorite.
My Husband thought this was GREAT! I left out the milk and added 1/4 cup sour cream, cut the peas to 1 cup but added 1 cup of frozen corn, and left out the thyme. Great for leftovers also!
I used ground chicken instead of beef, cream of chicken soup instead of celery, basmati rice instead of minute rice and I used shredded cheddar with sundried tomatoes and it was delicious. I just adapted this recipe to what I had in my fridge and pantry. This recipe has so many possibilities.
I agree with cutting down on the Thyme. I also added mixed veggies & some mushrooms instead of just peas.
The thyme was a little much, I'd reduce the amount, but everyone loved it. My teenager wasn't going to try it, and he loved it.
I used a cheese and broc. rice mix. It added a lot of flavor.
It was delicious, very easy to make and u have options, can use another vegetables and another soup, but it was very good, my family enjoyed it a lot.
As others suggested, I substituted Italian seasonings for basil (plus extra) with other assorted seasonings like onion powder, extra salt, and cayenne pepper. I sprinkled cheese between the layers of meat and rice, added mushrooms and used an entire can of soup. Delicious!
