What You Need

pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, divided

pkg. (2-layer size) chocolate cake mix

pkg. (3.9 oz.) JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding

eggs

cup BREAKSTONE'S or KNUDSEN Sour Cream

1/2

cup oil

1/2

cup water

tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping (Do not thaw.)

Tbsp. PLANTERS Sliced Almonds

Make It

HEAT oven to 350°F.

CHOP 2 oz. chocolate. Beat cake mix, dry pudding mix, eggs, sour cream, oil and water in large bowl with mixer until blended. Stir in chopped chocolate. Pour into 2 (9-inch) round pans sprayed with cooking spray.

BAKE 30 to 35 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min. Loosen cakes from sides of pans. Invert onto wire racks; gently remove pans. Cool cakes completely.

MICROWAVE COOL WHIP and remaining chocolate in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 1-1/2 min. or until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after 1 min. Let stand 15 min. to thicken.

STACK cake layers on plate, filling and frosting with COOL WHIP mixture. Sprinkle with nuts.

This cake has set the new standard for chocolate cake in our house! It's always better the next day after it's settled. It seems to stay moist forever. I guarantee every time you make this cake, there will never be left-overs!

This cake was perfect and so moist! I've never made a 2 layer cake before but I'm glad this was my 1st! Unlike other reviews, I had more than enough icing but I did let it set longer than 15 minutes to thicken. Next time I will use less chocolate chunks in the batter to decrease the richness.

I made this for my son's daycare teachers and they are really liked it. The only downfall is I felt I was a little short on the glaze/icing. Maybe I will make more next time.

This cake tastes better than any cake you could buy at the store bakery. I always let mine chill overnight. It's definitely worth the work. I make this cake for every special occasion and there is never leftovers. I skip the almonds and use chocolate shavings and pipe milk chocolate if it's for a bday cake. If your icing doesn't turn out dark like in their pic, microwave it longer. This past Easter, I used this recipe for our bunny cut up cake!

I have been making this cake for several years. If ever a recipe can satisfy a chocolate urge, this one will. Instead of the bars,I use a bag of semi sweet chips, slightly chopped. The more chocolate the merrier. Half for the cake and half for the frosting. You can also use a cake mix with pudding in the mix and also add a box of pudding. If the mood strikes, I add a tsp. of orange or raspberry extract to the frosting. I also like the height 8" round pans give the cake. Try some shaved vanilla chocolate to top it off. The almonds don't do it for me. Crunch doesn't belong with this cake.

I am sad to say that I am a bad cook :) I needed a birthday cake recipe. I typed in best chocolate cake in a search engine and this is one of the sites I received. I made this cake and wowee!!!!! My husband had a second piece and even talked about the cake again today! I was concerned about microwaving coolwhip but it was no big deal. After refrigerating this cake and having the frosting set up, it was beautiful!! My cake looked just like the picture. I can't believe it! (and neither can my family) I will definitely make this again. This cake tastes MARVELOUS.
