I had huge compliments on this strawberry shortcake. the "cake" part is a little thin, but, in the olden days, when one made a strawberry shortcake, the cake part was more like biscuit and that is the way this one is. One of my friends, who loves strawberry shortcake and orders it everytime he has the opportunity said, this was the best strawberry shortcake he had ever tasted and he has tasted many. I thought it was good. I am making it again today, and I think I will put more strawberries in, and I certainly put more than 3 Tblspn sugar on the strawberries. Simply because the strawberries we get here are not all that good and need a little help. I also put some of the pudding into the last part of the coolwhip. I thought it was a super recipe and so did everyone who tasted it.
I'm not sure what happened with other people's cakes, but I made this last week and it was fantastic! I had a hard time spreading the cake mixture, but I just put it into two pans. It came out a little lopsided, but otherwise great! I also used sugar free fat free chocolate pudding instead of vanilla. Everyone loved it!
I agree with leeann...I too made this for fathers day...the cake was dry and I actually had to make 2 cakes, because the first was SO THIN there was no way to cut it in half...when I went to serve it, trying to cut it to look presentable was not happening - the pudding made the entire top layer slide off - most of it was on the counter. THIS RECEIPE is going straight to the GARBAGE.
With so many great reviews I figued how could it go wrong. Well, first of all the cake was very brown and looked done but upon cutting it, I noticed it was still gooey and doughy inside. But that didn't matter because it completely crumbled and fell apart anyway. The "pudding" was also a disaster, it was nothing but vanilla flavored milk even with the cool whip added. It didn't even come close to the sort of texture needed to layer a cake with. I give it 2 stars because I went out to buy a pound cake, sliced it, and spooned the "pudding" stuff and the strawberries over it, and put the remaining cool whip on top. Thank goodness, that tasted good, otherwise there would have been no dessert for fathers day.
The short cake was awful it ruined dessert for Father's Day. Never would I make this again.
Tasted more like a cake, which I really enjoyed. Would make again.
I made a low fat version of this cake and it was delicious. I just used light cool whip, sugar free pudding, light biscuit mix, skim milk, and omitted the sugar on the strawberries. Everyone loved it!
Make it twice already ,once for my family and once as birthday cake. Received rave reviews on it and everyone wanted recipe. Definately will make this again and again . WAY TO GO !!!!
Even thoug it tasted good, it wasn't presentable to take outor serve to company. I had drained the strawberries overnight but the juices still made it messy. Also, I thought the cake part needed to be thicker.
EVERYONE loved this after they tried it. I will definitely make it again.
