What You Need

pkg. (2-layer size) chocolate cake mix

pkg. (3.9 oz.) JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding

1/3

cup KOOL-AID Orange Flavor Sugar-Sweetened Soft Drink Mix

Tbsp. hot water

can (16 oz.) ready-to-spread white frosting

OREO Cookies

pieces black string licorice (32 inches each)

miniature candy-coated chocolate pieces

Make It

PREPARE cake batter as directed on package; blend in dry pudding mix. Spoon into 24 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake as directed on package for cupcakes. Cool completely.

DISSOLVE drink mix in hot water. Stir into frosting in bowl until well blended. Use to frost cupcakes, reserving some of the frosting for attaching the decorations.

CUT each licorice piece into 16 (2-inch) lengths; set aside. Place 1 cookie on top of each cupcake; insert 4 licorice pieces into frosting on each side of cookie for the spider's legs. Use reserved frosting to attach chocolate pieces to tops of cookies for the spiders' eyes.

I really liked the concept of this recipe a lot. Although it was difficult to find black licorice in my area, I was albe to use regular cherry flavor and they still looked great. I recommend however buy the "Double Stuffed" Oreos because it was hard to stick the licorice into the regular oreo cookie. Or, do what I did and arange the licorice strips on the cupcake first and then place the cookie on top.

I mostly just used the idea for decorating. We just used regular chocolate cupcake mix and chocolate icing. As for the ddecoration we used Twizzlers peel n pull cherry licorice and just placed it under the cookie. It was very eay for my five year old and tons of fun! I think the legs being a different color just made it more fun!

I, too, could not find black licorice string and ended up cutting up licorice sticks to form legs. My 3 year old daughter helped put the cookies on top of each cupcake and added the legs. She loved that. Most of the legs did not stay in very well, but nobody seemed to mind. I did not care for the taste of the orange in the frosting, and plus, it became too thin when I added the orange flavoring. (I'm sure I missed a step while rushing a bit!) For future, I will use plain white frosting instead.

String licorice is no longer available in our area. Got a "roll" of licorice from a local candy store and cut it up. Licorice was hard to get into the cookie. Broke lots of cookies. Ended up using frosting to "glue" the two sides of the Oreos back together again, as we started taking them apart to get the licorice in. We stopped at 7 spiders as it was just too big a pain to do.

I have not tried to make it yet, but i find it beautiful and i think kids will love it. Actually i'm not good in baking yet but their's a saying that practice makes perfect. Right now i'm concentrating with the dishes for lunch, dinner and party dishes.

I made the Spider Cup Cakes for School. The kids were studing spiders. How Perfect! The black candy legs had to be cut into pieces and placed under the cookie (in the icing). Otherwise the cookie would crack and crumble. The koolaid tinting the icing was very cool and tasty for the kids. We will make these again.

I made these for my sons' class for his 8th birthday yesterday. He was thrilled!! The kids got a kick out of them, and I looked like some kind of cooking genius, with too much time on her hands :D !!

A fun recipe to make with your children or (in my case) grandchildren. Loads of fun making the spider. While I found black licorice for the spider legs, we could only find the red licorice that "peeled" and so we used red licorice for the legs. We placed two dots of icing on the Oreo so that the eyes would adhere. If you make a long line, it looks like eyebrows. Used food coloring in the icing to color it organge. Loads of laughs and a cute treat for classmates or dayschool.
